If you’re newly engaged, chances are you’ve already started searching for a realistic wedding budget breakdown, and quickly realized how overwhelming it can feel.
There’s a lot of advice out there about where to cut costs and where to spend, but the truth is, your wedding budget shouldn’t follow a one-size-fits-all formula. It should reflect you – your priorities, your people, and the kind of experience you want to create.
At Lila Lane Events, we don’t just look at your overall number and call it a day. We walk through your budget line by line so you can feel confident in every decision you’re making.

My first question is always about focusing on what is most important to you as a couple.
If y’all are foodies, let’s splurge on the food. If you are a gardening fiend, let’s have some wild, stunning florals. If you aren’t a big sweets person, let’s save on desserts.
Once we zoom in on the two of you, we zoom out a little and think about your guest experience.
Where is there a moment for your guests to say, “this is so them?” Maybe it’s a stunning floral installation at the bar or a one-of-a-kind seating chart. Or maybe it’s something more subtle like welcome drinks on a hot day, parasols for an outdoor ceremony, seating options during cocktail hour, or a personalized note at each place setting.
Doing all of this might be a lot, but choosing one or two intentional ways to appreciate your guests can be a very budget-friendly way to elevate their entire experience of the day.

Some elements consistently carry more weight than couples initially expect.
Your bouquet is one of the most photographed items of the day, both by your photographer and by your family’s phones, it will show up in so many memories of your wedding day. Splurging on a larger bouquet with higher-end blooms gives you something that truly feels like a statement piece worth preserving for years to come.

And if there’s one splurge we’ve never had a client regret? A beautiful dance floor.
So many of your biggest moments happen there – your first dance, parent dances, and a huge portion of your reception photos. Investing a little more here creates a designed, intentional backdrop and instantly elevates the entire space.

Another area that’s always worth thoughtful investment is your entertainment.
This doesn’t mean you have to hire the most expensive band or DJ, but it does mean prioritizing someone who is professional, reliable, and experienced. The entertainment throughout your reception plays a huge role in your guests’ overall experience, and a bad DJ or band can negatively affect the flow of the night in more ways than just dancing. When this piece is done well, it keeps the energy up, the timeline moving, and your guests fully engaged from start to finish.

From there, you can also think about one intentional element that adds to the guest experience in a memorable way. This might look like a DJ who also incorporates live music, a late-night snack like Whataburger, a second line into the reception, or even a coffee bar or live artist. It doesn’t have to be everything, but choosing one thoughtful moment like this can leave a lasting impression and make your celebration feel even more personal.

Not every upgrade is worth it, and knowing where to pull back can make a big difference.
Most couples provide an open bar experience for their guests, but most guests don’t actually care what tier of liquor is being served in their free drink. Splurging on top-shelf liquor often goes unnoticed, while signature cocktails or mocktails tend to feel more thoughtful and memorable.
Another area to be mindful of is your guest count. A smaller guest list naturally lowers your overall spend – fewer meals, fewer tables, and fewer centerpieces – while often creating a more intimate and intentional experience for everyone involved.
When it comes to your ceremony/altar design, thinking strategically can also help your budget go further. Instead of investing in pieces that are only used for a short window of time, look for ways to repurpose your decor throughout the day. Aisle markers can later become centerpieces or stage decor, and ceremony installations can be moved to your reception or sweetheart table. This allows you to get more value out of each element without sacrificing the overall look and feel.
And while this isn’t necessarily a place to “save,” setting a clear budget for your dress is incredibly important. A budget around your wedding dress is not a bad thing! Having a defined range going into bridal salon appointments not only keeps you grounded, but also helps your stylist guide you toward options that truly fit within your overall plan.
This is where we see couples get tripped up the most.
Many couples think that DIYing their signage will be a huge money saver. Unfortunately, once you add up all of the supplies and the time involved, it usually doesn’t save as much as you hoped. This often creates unnecessary stress leading up to the wedding. Unless you are already a crafty person with crafty friends, this can quickly become overwhelming.
Candles are another area where couples try to cut costs.
While candle-heavy designs can feel romantic and budget-friendly – sourcing, setting up, and breaking down everything yourself becomes a chore. Most florists can provide all of the candles for your wedding. This includes clean candle holders, vases or glass shields, high quality, drip-less candles (so they last all night and don’t ruin your table linens), all of the set up and design plus returning at the end of the night to pack everything up and take it away.
Many of our couples who try to DIY these elements end up wishing they had just hired a professional from the start.

This is where a true wedding budget breakdown becomes so valuable.
Planners don’t just look at your total number – we break it down line by line so you can stay on track as you book each vendor.
It’s easy to look at a big number and think, “Oh yeah, that’s not a problem.” But once you start assigning real numbers to each category, you might realize you’d rather shift your investment to something that matters more to you.
One of the biggest mindset shifts we encourage? Think in percentages, not just flat numbers. When you are comparing venues or specific vendors, it can be tempting to say “it’s in my budget” because it is less than your overall budget but that doesn’t mean it fits in with everything else.
For example, if your overall budget is $50,000 and you spend $15,000 on your venue, that’s 30% of your entire budget going to one decision. Once that much is committed, it can make the rest of your planning feel tight very quickly.
Being aware of that from the beginning helps you make more balanced, intentional choices.

As planners, we look at pricing, quotes, and contracts for our clients all day.
We’re highly aware of current pricing trends and can help guide you on what to expect based on your location and vision. More importantly, we help you make decisions before you’re locked into something that limits the rest of your budget.
A thoughtful, well-structured budget doesn’t just help you stay on track – it allows you to enjoy the process instead of constantly second-guessing your choices.
